Hamburg plays piggy in the middle

It’s not just British civil servants and ministers who have difficulties dealing with the private sector. The city-state of Hamburg has found itself pouring more and more money into one of their pet projects. The Elbphilharmonie (or Elbe Philharmonic) was supposed to open two years ago and cost €77 million (£63m/$100m), but may well end up costing half a billion euros (£414m/$640m) and won’t open until 2014.

Hamburg’s government decided to independently commission the architects and the builders. When the architects and building contractors began to disagree over the construction of the building, Hamburg was left in the middle – with the bill.

A perfect example of mismanagement – but heartening for Britain to know that we’re not alone...
